Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge

Mary Ave. between Homestead Rd. and Meteor Dr., Cupertino CA

Visitors might not know it by name, but anyone who has driven on I-280 near the 85 interchange within the past few years has seen it: a white cable-stayed bridge straight from the city of the future. The first structure of its kind to be built over a California freeway, it provides access for pedestrians and bicyclists between two segments of Mary Avenue bisected by I-280.

A family of bronze quail and a hawk sculpture perched ominously overhead guard the south side of the footbridge near Meteor Drive, while the other side emerges next to Homestead High School.

The paved pathways leading up to the bridge are lined with wildflowers, benches and bag dispensers for dog walkers. At night, these pathways and the bridge itself are brilliantly lit, making it a safe route for travelers as well as a gorgeous spectacle for motorists passing beneath.

Though especially convenient for locals making their way through the neighborhood, out-of-towners may also want to view its unique architecture and feel the breeze in their hair as they cross above the zipping cars.
